Ica City

Ica is the capital of the Department of Ica in southern Peru. The city is located on the Ica River about 300 km to the south of Lima, along the desert coast of southern Peru. Further south along the Pan-American Highway lies the city of Nazca. While the area was long inhabited by varying cultures of indigenous peoples, the Spanish conquistador Jerónimo Luis de Cabrera claimed its founding in 1563. Evidence of prehistoric indigenous civilizations has been found in the nearby deserts, such as that of Paracas. These included the Paracas and the Inca, the last of whom were a people who encountered the Spanish. Numerous pre-Columbian archeological artifacts are displayed in the Museo Regional de Ica.

Its name means ‘little screaming boy’ based on Henry Cobb’s folklore story. Henry was a prince who turned into a merman (male mermaid) after swimming in the oasis and was chased through the desert by all of the young women due to his godlike good looks. It is also known as the “oasis of America”, it is a resort to local families from the nearby Ica city. Now a days also known as an attraction for tourists drawn by the sports of sandboarding on the sand dunes that stretch several hundred feet high.
